Whole Wheat Hardo Bread Recipe (Jamaican Whole Wheat Bread Recipe)

February 19, 2026 By cmmsupport No Comments

What is Jamaican Hardo Bread?

Jamaican hard dough bread, also known as hardobread, is a slightly sweet, dense bread that is a Caribbean staple. It’s typically eaten with butter, jam, cheese, or plain with coco tea.

What is the Difference Between Jamaican Hardo Bread and Jamaican Whole Wheat Bread?

The major difference between hardo bread and whole wheat bread is the type of flour used. Both breads are made similarly, using a lot of the same ingredients, but the incorporation of whole wheat flour is what changes the composition, texture, and flavor of the bread.

What Ingredients do I need to Make Jamaican Whole Wheat Hardo Bread?

The ingredients you need are quite simple. You’ll need:

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Salt
  • Milk (unsweetened coconut milk if making coco bread)
  • Yeast
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter

Can I make Jamaican Whole Wheat Hardo Bread Vegan?

You can make whole wheat bread vegan by using vegan or plant based butter and swapping out whole milk for unsweetened coconut milk. Oat Milk is also another option you may use.

Whole Wheat Hardo Bread Recipe

Prep Time: 1 hr 20 minutes

Baking Time: 30 minutes

Servings: 7-8 slices of bread or 6 Coco bread flaps

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups of 100% Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 tbsp Salt
  • 1 packet of Yeast
  • 1 cup of unsweetened Coconut Milk or Whole milk
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Proof the yeast by adding 1 packet of yeast to 1/4 cup of warm water (water should be approximately 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit) along with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes until the yeast mixture has tripled in size and is foamy & bubbly.

Step 2: Warm the coconut milk (approximately 30 seconds in the microwave if using room temperature coconut milk)

Step 3: Melt 3 tbsp of butter and add it to the coconut milk along with 1 tbsp of brown sugar and yeast mixture. Stir.

Step 4: Add 1/2 tbsp salt to 3 cups of flour and mix well.

Step 5: Slowly pour coconut milk mixture into the flour, and scrape the sides down with a spatula if needed. Mold into a round mound of dough.

Step 6: Place your dough into a bowl greased with butter. Cover, and allow the dough to rise for at least 1 hour.

Step 7: Punch the air out of the dough. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes and shape into a loaf.

Step 8: Place bread into the oven at 350 degrees and bake for 30 minutes. Brush with melted butter when it’s finished and enjoy!
