Ahh beef patties! Who doesn’t love a nice beef patty, fresh out of the oven? I don’t know a single soul that can resist! I know beef patties have always been the quintessial snack no matter what mood you’re in or day of the week. This time I decided to put a little twist on beef patties. What if we made it using plantains? Yes! Plantains! Anyone who knows me knows the key to my heart is freshly fried plantains and what better way to combine my love for beef patties and plantains than to put them together?
Picking the Best Plantains
The best plantain to use for this recipe should look like the above. You can purchase the plantain when it is yellow and then make it semi ripe by leaving it near a window with direct sunlight for a few days, or simply putting it in a brown paper bag and allowing it to ripen for a day or two. Whichever method you choose, it should look this way!
Ingredients
-3 plantains (semi ripe)
-1 lb ground beef
-1 tsp all purpose seasoning
-1 tsp meat or cajun seasoning
-1 tsp old bay
-1 tsp onion powder
-1 tsp garlic powder
-4 oz mozzarella (shredded)
-4 oz gouda (shredded)
-3/4 cup of All purpose flour
-1/2 tsp baking powder
-1 tsp salt
-1/4 cup water
-2 cups of canola oil (or enough oil needed to deep fry)
You’ll need a small rolling pin and cling wrap to make this recipe! This recipe yields 6 plantain patties.
Directions:
Prep your plantain by creating a slit length wise along the surface, and cutting the plantain in half. Place into a pot of boiling water and boil for 20 minutes. Peel the skin off using a fork because it will be very hot! Place into the fridge to chill for 15 minutes. In a small frying pan, brown your ground beef and add your all purpose, cajun, and old bay seasoning along with onion & garlic powder. Set aside. Once your plantain has chilled, use a fork or pilon to mash the plantain. In a small mixing bowl, add flour, baking powder, salt, mashed plantain, and water. Knead until you have a round ball. The mound of plantain should not be sticky. If sticky, lightly dust with flour until your hand doesn’t stick. Section off 6 equal pieces. Lay each piece onto a section of cling wrap and close. Using a pilon or rolling pin, roll it out flat. Careful not to roll it out too flat! If you do, it will fall apart. Lift one side of the cling wrap, add a spoonful of cooked ground beef, sprinkle cheese, and using the cling wrap pull it toward you to close the patty. Lift the cling wrap and press along the sides with a fork. Repeat! In a frying pan, add your oil and heat for 5 minutes. Fry each patty on both sides for approximately 3 minutes. Total frying time: 5-7 minutes. Fry two at a time so the pan isn’t crowded and enjoy!
