Can I make Hard Dough bread and Coco Bread Vegan?

You can absolutely make hard dough bread and coco bread vegan. You can use plant based butter, and you can use coconut milk instead of cow’s milk. Oat milk is also a good substitute. Coconut milk can also be used to make the loaf of bread as opposed to making flaps.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All Purpose Flour

Directions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Proof the yeast by adding 1 packet of yeast to 1/4 cup of warm water (water should be approximately 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit) along with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes until the yeast mixture has tripled in size and is foamy & bubbly.

Step 2: Warm the coconut milk (approximately 30 seconds in the microwave if using room temperature coconut milk)

Step 3: Melt 3 tbsp of butter and add it to the coconut milk along with 1 tbsp of brown sugar and yeast mixture. Stir.

Step 4: Add 1/2 tbsp salt to 3 cups of flour and mix well.

Step 5: Slowly pour coconut milk mixture into the flour, and scrape the sides down with a spatula if needed. Mold into a round mound of dough.

Step 6: Place your dough into a bowl greased with butter. Cover, and allow the dough to rise for at least 1 hour.

Step 7: Punch the air out of the dough. If making hard dough bread shape into a loaf. If making coco bread, cut the dough into six equal pieces, roll each piece out until flat, and fold over to make flaps. Brush each with melted butter.

Step 8: Place bread into the oven at 350 degrees and bake for 30 minutes. Brush with melted butter when it’s finished and enjoy!
