If there’s one movie that perfectly captures the beauty, messiness, heartbreak, healing, and joy of female friendship, it’s Waiting to Exhale. So when I decided to host a cozy pajama night for my friends, the theme was a no-brainer.
Think: soft pajamas, candles everywhere, comforting food, deep conversations, laughter, tears, and that feeling of exhaling after a long season of holding it all together.
Whether you’re looking for girls’ night ideas, a cozy pajama party theme, or a way to host a meaningful night in with friends, here’s exactly how I planned my Waiting to Exhale inspired pajama night, plus everything you need to recreate it yourself.

Why a “Waiting to Exhale” Theme Is Perfect for a Pajama Night
This theme works beautifully because it blends nostalgia, comfort, and emotional connection, which is exactly what most of us crave when we gather with our girlfriends.
It’s especially perfect if:
-You love a cozy, at-home hosting moment
-You and your friends are navigating the natural ebb and flow of life in general
-You want something deeper than a surface-level hangout

Matching cozy pajamas and slippers were the foundation for the night. Here is the link to my Amazon storefront which leads you to the pajamas: https://amzn.to/4pMCuoU
Want to host a Waiting to Exhale pajama night but unsure where to start with your menu?
The first thing I planned was the menu. Keep it simple and make sure there are 3 courses. Appetizers, 2-4 entree choices, and a dessert. Keep in mind any dietary restrictions and ensure that if you’re having vegan guests, they can participate with at least 2-3 choices. Here are some menu suggestions:
Appetizers
-Assorted fruit (you can buy a pre-assembled fruit platter)
-Charcuterie or Party tray (Hormel makes an excellent cracker, cheese, pepperoni, and salami party tray)
-Chips and various dips station (nacho cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole)
Entrees
-Vegetable Fried Rice (you can make it yourself or buy it frozen. I recommend Trader Joe’s vegetable fried rice) Serve in pineapple boats to elevate the presentation
-Vegetable Chow Mein or Lo Mein (you can also make this or buy it frozen. I recommend Trader Joe’s vegetable chow mein as well. Just add your own seasoning and don’t use the seasoning sauce included)
-Turkey meatballs served in sauce
-Garlic Butter Steak & Shrimp Skewers
-Baked Mac n Cheese
-Tossed Salad
-Steamed Vegetables
-Buttery Corn on the Cob
Don’t be afraid to cater from your favorite restaurant!
Dessert:
-Cookies
-Cake
Drinks:
-Large batch cocktails
-Mimosa Bar
-Hot Cocoa Staion
* I outsourced the custom cookies and cake

How to Entertain your Guests and Come up with Conversation Starters at your Waiting to Exhale Pajama Night
You can’t have a pajama night without games! It’s the perfect way to engage your guests, start conversation, and create memories. I searched on Etsy for the perfect Waiting to Exhale game package. I selected an immediate download that was delivered straight to my email. I printed out the amount of copies I needed at Staples, and placed the game packet in everyone’s gift bag. This is the Etsy listing I used to get the bundle: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4390860505/?ref=share_ios_native_control
I also made a playlist of r&b and urban throwbacks on Spotify beforehand. I already knew the vibe and mood I wanted to set. I included some slow jams, a few songs from the movie soundtrack, and a few mid tempo songs for a spirited sing a long. How to Decorate your Waiting to Exhale Pajama Night Party
The right decor will take your Waiting to Exhale pajama night from average to memorable. Include personal touches and iconic scenes from the movie to make the space engaging. I found a downloadable Waiting to Exhale Pajama Night welcome sign to place by the door.
Once I downloaded the welcome sign, I placed an order for a poster board (size 20×30) from Walgreens and picked it up along with one 8×11 photo of the cast of Waiting to Exhale, one 5×7 photo of the soundtrack album cover, one 4×6 photo of Angela Bassett’s infamous car burning scene, and one 4×6 photo of the cast in the movie sitting down by the couch.

Also included in my decor plans:
- Nude, light brown, and dark chocolate balloons
- Terracotta colored cheese cloth table runners
- Beige or terracotta colored cheese cloth napkins
- Gold Napkin rings
- Earth Toned wine glasses
- Dark brown and light brown ostrich feather decor
- Elevated disposable flatware
- Flickering flameless tea lights
- Fresh florals (especially Baby’s Breath)
You can get the link to all of these decorative touches here at my Amazon Storefront: https://amzn.to/49QyVIE
Waiting to Exhale party favors also add a personal touch and make the party even more engaging. You can download the template package from Etsy and then custom order chip bags, water bottles, chap sticks, etc. Here is an Etsy listing that has Waiting to Exhale party favors: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4439221113/?ref=share_ios_native_control
